What is OSI Model?

OSI stands for Open System Interconnection. It is a reference model for communication over the network, It defines how the computer or the devices will communicate over the network.

The main purpose of OSI Model was to guide vendors, manufacturer, and the developers so the digital communication products and software programs can interoperate, and facilitate a clear framework that describes the functions of networking or a telecommunication system.

What is TCP/IP Model?

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol. It is a communication protocol that enables the devices to communicate on the internet.

TCP/IP Protocol specifies how data is exchanged over the internet by providing end to end communications that identify how it should be broken into packets, addressed, transmitted, routed and received at the destination.

Difference between OSI and TCP IP model

There are many similarities and differences between the OSI and TCP/IP Model so currently, I am going to explain. These are:

  1. OSI stands for Open System Interconnection while TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.
  2. OSI was invented by the ISO  (International Standard Organisation) in 1984 whereas TCP/IP was in 1970 by the DOD (Department of Defence).
  3. OSI Model has Seven Layers, Application Layer, Presentation Layer, Session Layer, Transport Layer, Network Layer, Data Link Layer, and the Physical Layer whereas TCP/IP has four Layer, Application Layer, Transport Layer, Internet Layer, and the network access layer.
  4. OSI Model is Less Reliable than the TCP/IP Model.
  5. OSI is based on theoretical while TCP/IP is based on the real scenario.
  6. OSI provides connection-oriented and connectionless services while TCP/IP provides only connection-oriented services.
  7. TCP/IP follows horizontal approaches whereas OSI model follows vertical approaches.
  8. Some layers of the OSI model cannot be fully defined whereas all layers of the TCP/IP can be fully defined.
  9. OSI Model is not protocol dependent whereas in TCP/IP model is protocol dependent.
  10. In OSI, Transport layer guarantees delivery of packets while in TCP/IP, Transport Layer does not guarantee delivery of packets.
  11. OSI has separate session and presentation layer whereas TCP/IP combines the session and presentation layer in the application layer.
  12. In OSI Model was developed before the development of the protocols whereas in TCP/IP protocols were developed first and then the model was developed.
  13. Protocols are hidden in the OSI Model and can be easily replaced as the technology change whereas in the TCP/IP model replacing protocol is not easy.
  14. To Define the routing protocols and the standards. OSI uses Network Layer while Whereas TCP/IP uses Internet Layer.
  15. OSI model is no longer used whereas TCP/IP is still used in computer networking.

Similarities between the OSI Model and the TCP/IP Model

  • Both TCP/IP and the OSI Model are the logical models.
  • Both provide standards for communication in networking.
  • TCP/IP and OSI separates the network communication process into the layers.
  • They provide a framework for creating and implementing networking standards on the devices.
  • They allow a manufacturer to make devices and network components in which they able to interoperates.
  • Both models simplify the troubleshooting process by dividing complex functions into simpler components.
  • Both the models share similar architecture & it can be defined by the fact that both of them are constructed with layers.
