As we can understand by the name of WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), wireless means without wire. So, WLAN is also like LAN. It is a wireless network of the computer systems that connects two or more systems for the function of the LAN network with a small area locality such as campus, offices, schools, etc.
This network allows the users to move around in the locality without losing their network connectivity. It can also provide connectivity with wider internet through a gateway. The most common and modern WLAN are based on the IEEE 802.11 technology of standards and are listed under the branded wifi. This has become more popular for use in houses for people’s personal use as it is easy to install.
The world’s first WLAN computer network was developed by a professor at the University of Hawaii, Norman Abramson. It became operational in 1975 and also covers the server system over the islands to communicate with the central server computer to Oahu Island. WLAN is so expensive to install so that only used as an alternate method where cabling of LAN is difficult or impossible. At the beginning of 1991, a new version of the standard which is European known as Hyper LAN / 1 was developed by the European Telecom Services Institute (ETSI) with its first version accepted in 1996.
All the components are known as stations (STA) that connect into a WLAN network. All STA are equipped with Wireless Network Interface Controllers (NICs). STAs are divided into two categories, clients and wireless access points. Basically wireless routers are its base stations.
They can receive and transfer radio frequencies to communicate with wireless supported devices. Its clients may be like laptops, smartphones, tablets, computers, etc.

Types of WLAN
Infrastructure
In this mode, many wifi networks are developed. There is a base station, act as a wireless access point hub, also node which communicates through that hub. The hub usually not always has fiber or wired connection and permanent wireless connectivity with other nodes.
Bridge
This can be used to connect all the networks of different types. A wireless bridge allows all the devices to connect on a wired Ethernet to a wireless network. It also acts as the point of connection for the WLAN.
Advantages of WLAN
- Mobility-It supports productivity and allows access to real-time information. WLAN also promotes flexibility for its users to connect easily.
- Installation Speed and Simplicity- There is a simple and fast installation in WLAN. Because no need for connecting cables and some receivers are required for many users.
- Reduced Cost of Ownership- WLAN does not require any cable connection or wiring closets. So, it is also less expensive and also mobile devices are cheaper than computer workstations.
Disadvantages of WLAN
- Less Capacity- WLAN does not provide big capacity to its users. Because it can allow a small area locality.
- Cost- The access point of WLAN is more expensive than wires and hubs. These cards cost two times more than wired cards.
- Environmental Conditions- WLAN may awkward by the terrains, buildings or trees, etc. These are also dependent on the weather condition and activity of the solar environment.
