Auto Summarization in RIP is the main feature to allow Routing Information Protocol (RIP), automatically connected to the network and summarize its routes. In the auto summarized route, the network will use only the default subnet mask-size.

The summarization is not working with continues networks, “show IP protocols” this is a command used to check that the auto summarization is working or not.

If two routers are connected to a network like R1 and R2 if the R1 sends a summarized route to the R2. In RIP auto summarization can be disabled, it will automatically enable.

The two versions of RIP are RIPv1 and RIPv2, RIPv1 will allow switch off the auto summarization, but in the case of RIPv2 does not allow auto summarization.

Some times the auto summarization will be automatically turned on the first router R1, This will automatically generate a summary.

The main advantage of the summarization is to save the memory, which will reduces the routing table size. One of the important parts of automatic summarization is machine learning and data mining is. Extraction and abstraction are the two methods used for the auto summarization.

RIPv1does not used in the Internetworking system, so it is a continuous network.RIPv2 is used to disabling the auto summarization.

Summarization in routes that are to be directly connected to the databases, check that if any parent route participates in the summarized route that is avoided as RIP.

RIP database to check that the summary address is present, automatically create a summary of the entry in the RIP routing databases. if the child route address will be remaining on the database, it will first remove the last child address from the database.

Advantage of auto summarized routes:

⦁    The main advantage of auto summarization is to decrease the size of the routing table. It will decrease the load of the routers.

⦁    if you are not enabled the auto summarization sub-net mask will be taken as it is a classful RIPv1.

⦁    The main disadvantage of the auto summarization will create problems in the unordered networks only.

⦁    In auto summarization, the first route of the network will be connected with a Personal Computer.

Auto summarization in RIP can be used, but some disadvantages and advantages are listed:

⦁    EIGRP can be automatically installed, but in the case of RIP not.

⦁    EIGRP routes will be removed from the routing table.

⦁    In the case of RIP, minimize the size of the routing table and it is stable.

⦁    The route summarization will create a new method is named as summary routes, and it will contain more collection of network and it is named as Supernetting.

Steps to configuring.

  • First, enable the Routing Information Protocol Routes like R1 and R2.
