IEEE 802.11 Wireless Standard: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or the IEEE is a New York-based international professional association of electrical engineers and electronic engineering formed in 1963. IEEE 802.11 is a part of a LAN Protocol standard set called IEEE 802 which belongs to the IEEE. The job of this standard is to assign Media Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer protocols for the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Wi-Fi for an over the base interface consisting of either a wireless client and a base station or two wireless clients.
Since it is a large number of the set, these standards brought together are called 802.11 Family. Some of the most important ones are listed below –
11 – launched in 1997, it is the first-ever standard with which the family started. To simplify it, it was the first-ever Wi-Fi technology to be introduced to the consumer. After that, internet connectivity and was never the same again in the sense of availability.
11a – the more extended version of the above. The devices and router made with these standards are mainly used in the businesses and are not as common as the 801.11b.
11b – similar to the first-ever standard, this is one of the most common ones and is easily available in the consumer market.
If you’re looking for an advanced and increased speed for the Wi-Fi over your connection, you should opt for 802.11g which will also give you high power and better coverage. It is a valid successor to the above standard.
Another option for enjoying one the fastest Wi-Fi service is to 802.11ad. But the only downside is that this does not support far distant devices. It needs to be installed within 3 meters of the connected device.
Also known as the Wi-Fi 5, 802.11ac provides all of the above advantages with an additional bandwidth so you can enjoy even a better data rate.
The predecessor (802.11n) of the above standard is a multi-tasker that can provide data on 2 frequencies and is often referred to as having dual-band.
The most energy-efficient standard among these is 802.11ah which is suitable if the requirements state the need for a communication channel with a longer range using less energy.
