How to Connect to Router
There are various methods by which you will able to access the router. Routers have no input and output devices like mouse, keyboard, and monitor, etc. then how we access the routers. To know more about “How to Connect to Router Using Console Auxiliary and Protocols” keep reading this article till the end.
There are following methods by which the router can be accessed. These are:
- Console port
- Auxiliary port
- Telnet
- SSH
- Web
Connection Using Console port
Auxiliary port allows you to connect an external modem to the router. By connecting the router’s console port to the workstation by using a console cable. The console port is the management port in which the administrators use it to log into a router directly with that without using a network connection. Hyperterminal or putty software are required to connect to the router. When a router cannot be accessed over the network then the console port connection helps to configure the router.
Connection Using Auxiliary port
Auxiliary port helps the network administrator to connect an external modem to the router. It allows direct, non-network connection to the router from a remote location. The auxiliary port uses a connector type to which modem can be plugged which allows management from a remote location to access the router like a console port
Connection using Protocols like Telnet, SSH, HTTP or HTTPS.
By using the TCP/IP protocols like Telnet, SSH, HTTP or HTTPS the router can be managed over the network. The console port and the auxiliary port provide non-network communication with the router but the Telnet, SSH, HTTP or HTTPS provide communication over the network.
Telnet, SSH, HTTP or HTTPS protocols provide access to the command line interface of the router over the network. Telnet sends and receives data in plain text. Hence, telnet is used in a limited area like LAN (Local Area Network) or private networks. Telnet communicate with the other device on a port number 23 over the network.
SSH is the short form of Secure. The SSH sends and receives the data in the encrypted format so the data over the network cannot be access and stolen by the hacker and unauthorized person. As data is encrypted, we can use SSH in public networks like the internet.
HTTP or HTTPS is a web-based application protocol. This protocol helps the network engineer to access router in GUI (Graphical User Interface).
