Types of connection link: Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a combination of devices from one or more Local Area Network (LANs) which are categorized based on their functionalities and characteristics.

These VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) are used mainly in large organizations or companies where they can manage the network traffic. This means they are mainly used to control network traffic.

Vlans (Virtual Local Area Network)are flexible and are situated between different LAN (Local Area Network)segments. Vlans (Virtual Local Area Network) are worked on a logical based connection rather than a physical one. Vlans are connected with IP subnetworks.

The task for the network administrator was simplified by the VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) by dividing and grouping the network. In simple form VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is the simplified form of LAN (Local Area Network) network.

To create a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) in the management domain we need the following parameters like we need VLANs name, number, type, state (active state or suspended state), maximum transmission unit, security association identifier, etc. based on the media it requires different VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) number if VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) software is moved from one VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) type to another.

In our network we can create and modify the network by following certain rules and guidelines, they are:-

In VTP server mode or VTP, transparent mode puts the catalyst 4500 series switches before creating a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network).

In VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) database mode, the ios end command is not supported.

In VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) database mode to exit from the program, ctrl-z is not supported.

Functions of VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)

Some of the points about VLAN(virtual local area network) like its functionalities are defined in the upcoming sections, they are as follows.

  • On the same network, the end devices of VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) can make a logical group.
  • Number of broadcast domains can be increased in the VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) by LAN (Local Area Network) by grouping the different hosts having the same functions.
  • Decrease the security risk by implementing the VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network).
  • Due to VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) flexibility, it can group the networks based on different departments.
  • Changing the user or the host in the VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is easy. For that, it requires only the new port-level configuration.

Types of connection link

There are different types of connection link are also used to connect the networks, they are:

  • Access link
  • Trunk link

Access link

Normally access links are used for end devices. This link is a part of only one link. The device that is connected to this link is not aware of the VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) membership. These links can understand only standard Ethernet frames.

Trunk link

Trunk link can carry multiple VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) and can connect one switch or router to another. This link is not allocated to any VLAN(Virtual Local Area Network).
