The article going to discuss in this section is about the different types of VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) modes. Discussing the kind of VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) modes defines and explains it as several sections with a brief description. So before discussing the main topic let’s create an overview of VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) and VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) is below the next two paragraphs.
From the above-discussed articles, it is clear about what is known as VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) and VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) in the network. So there is no need to discuss detail in this part. As we all know VLAN is a Virtual Local Area Network and is used by multinational companies or large organizations to handle the traffic in their network.
VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network) are more flexible so they can be used in any way. Two different types of protocols are established by the Cisco team for handling the VLAN information in the network and are named as Inter-switched Link (ISL) and IEEE 802.1Q.
VTP is the VLAN Trunking Protocol is a protocol introduced by the Cisco team for advertising the VLAN information all over the network. VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) can easily insert, update or delete the VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) information in the network. Different versions are also developed according to their compatibility. The works for the network administrator also gets controlled and avoid the overload of works.
KINDS OF VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) MODES
The VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) contains three different modes and is discussed in explained in the bottom section. They are:
- Server mode
- Client mode
- Transparent mode
SERVER MODE
The default used mode in the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) is the server mode. These are mainly used in the switches made of catalysts. In the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) domain section, it must contain at least one server to spread the idea within the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) domain. The VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) information can be added, delete or update in this mode. The alterations made in this mode also affect the entire VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) domain.
CLIENT MODE
The client mode in the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) understands all the advertisements of VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) from several switches and accordingly, they make changes in the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol). The client mode in the network must require a server mode to get the information of VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) to this mode and to make changes. In the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) client mode, we cannot update, add or remove the VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) information.

TRANSPARENT MODE
Like the server mode and client mode, they have a role in the VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) domain sections and perform their tasks. But the transparent mode does not participate like them. The transparent mode just receives the information of VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) and they forward the information of VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network). And this information is passed through the trunk link.
