You might be wondering What Protocol Below Supports Two Encryption Modes Transport And Tunnel, well.
The Internet protocol supports both the modes called transport mode and the tunnel mode. typically, the internet protocol can apply to three layers like the Network layer, transport layer, and application layer. The IP security is present at the network layer. IP security is shortly known as the IPsec. IP security normally consists of two modes. They are
- Transport Mode
- Tunnel Mode
It also consists of two versions of the protocols as authentication Header and the ESP (Encapsulation security payload). And it also consists of a security association. The security association is a wireless service to communicate between the two network devices. In the network layer, we apply security between the two networks or two hosts or it can be one host and one router. Let us discuss the two types of modes.
- Transport Mode
- Tunnel Mode
Transport Mode
In the Transport mode, Ip security protects the data that is delivered between the transport layer and the network layer. The transport layer will protect the payload from encapsulating with the network layer. The below diagram represents the transport mode in IP security. The transport layer doesn’t protect the IP packet or IP header. It only protects the packet from the transport layer. The transport layer is used for the end to end protection. Only the payload is get protected in the transport mode layer.
Tunnel Mode
The Tunnel Mode protects the entire IP packet. The entire IP packet is taken and will apply the IPsec methods to the entire packet. The Tunnel mode is normally used between the host to the router, router to router, router to host but not host to host. The main advantage of the Tunnel mode is, it can protect the entire IP packet, unlike the transport mode.
